Your rights: an overview

The Bill of Rights is Chapter Four of the Constitution. It belongs to every person in Kenya, whether you are a citizen or not.

Some of the rights it protects

• Equality and freedom from discrimination (Article 27)
• Human dignity (Article 28)
• Freedom and security of the person (Article 29)
• Privacy (Article 31)
• Freedom of expression (Article 33)
• Access to information (Article 35)
• Freedom of assembly and protest (Article 37)
• Economic and social rights — health, housing, food, water, education (Article 43)
• Fair hearing (Article 50)

Rights are not a favour

Rights are not given by the State; they belong to you. The State must respect, protect, promote and fulfil them. (Articles 19 and 21)
